Welcome to Zimbabwe...and to Matobo National Park, the first of the three world heritage sites guests will visit on this itinerary. Not only does the Matobo National Park and the surrounding area boast one of the world’s highest concentrations of san rock art, dating back to 13,000 years; but it is also one of the last bastions of both black and white rhinoceros in Africa. The Matobo landscape is truly breathtaking, punctuated by seemingly endless hills, massive granite outcrops and boulders balanced precariously on top of each other which play host to the most concentrated leopard population in the country and over 400 bird species. Other wildlife species include bushbuck, impala, kudu, zebra, giraffe and monkeys, baboons and rock hyrax. The best chance of encountering the rhino is to get out on foot and follow along as a highly skilled guide tracks their spoor through the rugged terrain. No visit to Matobo National Park is complete without exploring the numerous caves that abound the area, most of which contain ancient rock art; human and animal figures, complex patterns and vegetationinspired designs are all depicted in the drawings painted onto the walls of caves by san bushmen centuries ago. For those in search of a more cultural experience the My Beautiful Home bicycle ride traverses a carefully plotted route through the local ndebele villages that surround the National Park, all of whom are competitors in the annual My Beautiful Home competition held each year to uphold the traditional Ndebele custom of painting and decorating their homesteads in bright colours.

Welcome to Hwange National Park... the largest in Zimbabwe, covering an impressive 14,650 sq km, with the main entrance located a two-hour drive or 30-minute flight south of Victoria Falls. The park is named after a local Nhanzwa chief, and was once the royal hunting ground for the Ndebele warriorking Mzilikazi, before being classified as a protected National Park in 1929. As you’d expect from a park of this size, the breadth of wildlife species is astounding. Over 100 species of mammals reside here, whilst almost 400 species of birds decorate the skies. Perhaps most exciting is the 40,000- strong population of tusker elephants, whose presence is world-renowned and a joy to watch day after day.

Welcome to the Lower Zambezi... This National Park lies on the northern bank of the Zambezi River, the Park stretches back through the hills to the north but most of the game is found on the fairly narrow strip of land between the river and the hills. There are a few camps up-stream of the National Park but very few inside the Park itself so visitors never feel overcrowded. One of the features that make it so popular is the variety of activities on offer, with a river that is navigable year-round come waterborne activities such as boating and canoeing to contrast with the usual driving and walking safaris that are also available. This stretch of the mighty Zambezi is also one of the best areas in which to fish for the notorious Tiger Fish, Africa's most exciting freshwater sport fish.
Explore Mpala Jena Camp

  • In 1979 when the Zambezi National Park was established there was an albino impala ram resident in the river-line that runs through where the present day camp is located and hence the area became known as ‘Mpala Jena’ which means ‘white impala’.
  • Victoria Falls, the adrenalin capital of Africa, is located 20km from the camp and has over 40 different activities to choose from.
  • Each tent has both indoor and outdoor bathrooms.

Welcome to Mana Pools... Situated in the northern region of Zimbabwe, on the southern banks of the Zambezi River, Mana Pools National Park leaves guests breathless with its beauty. A paradise for walking and canoeing safaris, Mana is a wildlife-rich, biodiverse wonderland that will delight at every turn. Guests can expect to spot hippopotamus, crocodile, elephants and a wonderful array of aquatic birds within this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there’s a good chance of seeing lioness’ hunting around waterholes, where prey are seemingly easy pickings. The landscapes are beautiful too, dotted with acacia trees, whose shade becomes vital to the parks’ more than 12,000-strong elephant population in the dry season, as well as a sprinkling of vibrant plant life. Far away from any human settlement, guests will relish the feeling of remoteness here. Surrounded only by extreme wilderness, and from May to August Mana Pools hosts the highest concentration of wildlife in Africa, an experience for which words can do no justice

Welcome to Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve... As custodians of the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in Zimbabwe, the Malilangwe Trust manages the conservation of this pristine wilderness – which comprises 38 different habitats and ecological zones in 130,000 acres of protected land. After successfully introducing 28 black and 15 white rhinos to the reserve in 1998, it’s now home to a globally significant population of both and the programme has been so successful that it is a source for restocking rhinos in other reserves on the continent. The Trust has developed a blueprint for creating harmony between conservation initiatives and community development in villages that neighbour wildlife areas and ensured a sanctuary for a wide range of wildlife, including breeding herds of rare antelope species such as sable and roan. An onsite Environmental Education Centre for school teachers and children allows them to immerse themselves in Outdoor Education and fieldwork, while the Trust’s nutrition programme provides 20,000 children with a fortifying meal before school everyday in order to address increasing food insecurity in the region.
